Revised blog post #2

“Not Everything We Have We Like”

For class we had to read three different essays’ and pick one we would like to write about. The essay I picked is called “My Life as a Dog’ by Jonathan Safran Foer. As I read this I realized that I didn’t like this essay one bit. The author starts talking about how dogs can be off a leash with a permit. In my opinion if your dog is trained well enough and you trust him/her they can be off the leash. After that the author states that how he thinks it’s inconvenient for dogs to be off their leashes in such a big city. That screams to me that if you have a busy life or live in a big city you shouldn’t get a dog. That got me thinking about homeless people having dogs. Is that an inconvenience too? For a homeless person to have a companion? As the essay goes on he ended up adopting a dog, which completely contradicts himself. Once he gets the dog he still complains about how awful this dog is. Why would you spend a bunch of money on a dog when you don’t even like them in the first place? Doesn’t makes sense to me. As this story comes to an end she says even though she if awful he loves her and that he thinks that dog should be allowed to be off a leash with a permit. With me being a huge dog person this just blows my mind. It’s very confusing as a reader that the author keeps changing his opinion constantly.

Revised Blog Post #5

“Anything Can Happen If You Believe”

The movie Miracle is about a man named Herb Brooks, who became the head coach of the USA hockey team. Coach Brooks held try outs and selected 26 undisciplined players and only kept 20 of them. In the beginning of the movie two players have issues with one another due to something that happened in the past. First day of practice as a team a dirty hit was taken and a fight broke out. After it was settled Herb made the team go to the line as a punishment to skate suicides. The team did them so much they started calling them “Herbies”. When the head of the board finds out that Brooks had picked out the team without his consult he had confront coach. Herb argued that he had watched all their films and picked out the teams before the try outs. Everyone underestimated him and his coaching abilities. The first game the team played together the team tied and then bench players were only worried about the hot females at the game. That’s when Herb Brooks got pissed and make them do an endless number of Herbies. As the season went on the team became way stronger. They started winning and became more confident with themselves and as a team. They had a rough couple of games coming up which included the Soviets, which has always destroyed their team in the past. Herb Brooks gave an inspirational speech right before the game motivating them that they’re going to win this game. Turns out they won and after many years defeated the Soviets. They continued on and won the gold medal for the USA. With everyone that underestimated them, all the guys as a team proved to the world that they had what it takes to win!

Revised Selma Blog Post #4

“A Walk to Remember”

Photo of Martin Luther King Junior during the time of Selma

The movie we were assigned to watch is about a very important figure in U.S. History. Martin Luther King Jr. is the person I am talking about. In this film, it shows his everyday life and his fights with the civil rights movement. I am usually not a bug fan when it comes to historical movies, but I found this one incredibly interesting. This movie had thought me many things also. I guess I didn’t understand how bad the African race was actually being treated. Selma put it in perspective and showed how awful it really was. I also learned about the walk to Selma. The first attempt to walk to Selma the police had told them to turn around and go home. The police were brutal to the race just because they wanted to stick up and support their rights. It made me think of how grateful and lucky I am that I didn’t have to grow up and experience all this. It just blows my mind that one person can stand out and stick up for something they believe in. Another thing I would like to point out is how calmly he had handled all the hate and threats. I think it really helped that he was a preacher. I feel like it made him a lot more level headed than other people upset with this issue, since they used and talked about God too. Since MLK Jr. did that he changed the world for his race, he should be considered a legend in the world.
