“Not Everything We
Have We Like”
For class we had to read three different essays’ and pick
one we would like to write about. The essay I picked is called “My Life as a
Dog’ by Jonathan Safran Foer. As I read this I realized that I didn’t like this
essay one bit. The author starts talking about how dogs can be off a leash with
a permit. In my opinion if your dog is trained well enough and you trust
him/her they can be off the leash. After that the author states that how he
thinks it’s inconvenient for dogs to be off their leashes in such a big city.
That screams to me that if you have a busy life or live in a big city you
shouldn’t get a dog. That got me thinking about homeless people having dogs. Is
that an inconvenience too? For a homeless person to have a companion? As the
essay goes on he ended up adopting a dog, which completely contradicts himself.
Once he gets the dog he still complains about how awful this dog is. Why would you
spend a bunch of money on a dog when you don’t even like them in the first
place? Doesn’t makes sense to me. As this story comes to an end she says even
though she if awful he loves her and that he thinks that dog should be allowed
to be off a leash with a permit. With me being a huge dog person this just
blows my mind. It’s very confusing as a reader that the author keeps changing his
opinion constantly.
